Our signature event: FARM FEST

Farm Fest allows us to educate and be in community with local farmers and folks from nearby towns. Friday is a day full of seminars and opportunities to learn more about current trends and innovations in the farming community and Saturday is a packed, free, family-fun event the whole community can enjoy. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29TH

Come experience on-farm learning through hands-on workshops, presentations, and educational hikes featuring Penn State University Extension (PDA pesticide applicator recertification credits available), Penn West University Clarion Small Business Development Center, and others. This year’s event will also include nature-based artistic workshops…including Plein Air painting and a photography hike on the farm!

Pesticide Applicator Training (Core Courses)

What is the Worker Protection Standards and How Can you comply? (30 minutes - requesting 1 core credit) The EPA’s Worker Protection Standard (WPS) EPA's WPS is a regulation aimed at reducing the risk of pesticide poisonings and injuries among agricultural workers and pesticide handlers. This 30-minute presentation will introduce you to the standard, and we’ll provide resources to help your farm comply with the standard. PPE Review (30 minutes - requesting 1 core credit) Wearing the proper PPE for pesticide application is critical for the protection of pesticide applicators and handlers. In this presentation, we will review a few pesticide labels and select the proper PPE for the job.

Weed Identification Walk

2pm - 3pm, FREE

Extension Educator(s) will lead a 1-hour outdoor weed identification walk through 3 Pillarz Farm covering pasture and other agricultural use land. This workshop will provide resources on weed identification, best practices for species determination, and critique of common identification tools (field guides, apps, etc.). Management of the weeds with IPM and herbicides will be discussed including timing and strategies for long-term control. Plant morphology, important weed families, critical species of concern in Pennsylvania agriculture, and the relationship between land use and species prevalence will be covered. (Participants will be eligible for 2 credits for PA Dept. of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator Certification)

I Meant to Work on My Business Plan…But Then Life Happened

90-minute workshop on business plan development for farmers and value-added producers: A business plan is your road map, combining dreams with reality. Most farmers know they need a plan, but it is difficult to justify time to write it. Join the Pennsylvania Small Business Development Centers to try out proven strategies and tools to build a working, living plan for your farm. Learn about statewide consulting services, available at no cost, to help you create your comprehensive business plan.

Watercolor Painting

Participants will learn the basics of watercolor painting while capturing scenic views of the farm and Pine Valley. (All paint materials provided.)

2pm - 3:30pm, $20/per person

Photography Farm Walk

Participants will discover tips to enhance camera use and secrets of lighting to capture beautiful images of the farm and its natural surroundings.

Return to our farm on Saturday for a community fun and education day from 10 am - 5 pm! Goat yoga, Penn State Extension, organic regenerative ag practices with Rodale Institute, horse-drawn wagon rides by Laff 'n Lyon Ranch, Ms. Joanie's shuttle, petting zoo, food trucks, live music, and more!
